INSIGHTS conducted a comprehensive child protection rapid assessment in Somalia, commissioned by SOS Somalia, UNICEF, and the Child Protection Area of Responsibility (CPAoR), to address critical gaps in understanding and responding to child protection risks and needs. The assessment explored the scale and nature of risks faced by children, particularly in contexts of conflict, displacement, and socio-economic challenges. It analyzed the effectiveness of existing child protection systems, identified unmet needs, and assessed the capacities of local communities, national systems, and international actors to address these vulnerabilities. Key areas of focus included understanding the drivers of child protection concerns, documenting the perspectives of children and caregivers, and mapping community-based protection structures.
The assessment also evaluated the strengths and gaps in current interventions and conducted a capacity gap analysis to identify areas for improvement. By centering the voices of children and caregivers, the study provided valuable insights into the challenges faced and resilience factors within communities. The findings culminated in actionable recommendations to guide SOS Somalia, UNICEF, and CPAoR in strengthening child protection systems, with clear priorities for geographical and programmatic interventions. These recommendations aim to enhance coordination, improve system functionality, and build a safer environment for children across Somalia.
